Your licence is the beginning

Build experience beyond the driving test

Passing the practical test proves you can drive independently to the required standard. Pass Plus develops the situations many new drivers have experienced only briefly, or not at all.

EXPERIENCE

Broaden your driving

Move beyond familiar learner routes and gain supported experience across faster, darker and less predictable roads.

JUDGEMENT

Read risk earlier

Improve anticipation, space management and decision-making before a developing situation becomes urgent.

INDEPENDENCE

Drive with a plan

Build calm routines for unfamiliar journeys, changing weather and the higher speeds of major roads.

Who it helps

Who Pass Plus training is suitable for

The official scheme can be taken at any time, although GOV.UK says it may be most useful to new drivers during the first year after passing.

New driver

Your first year alone

Replace uncertainty with coached experience before difficult journeys become unavoidable.

Motorway beginner

First high-speed journeys

Learn safe joining, lane discipline, overtaking, signs and leaving the motorway.

Low confidence

Nervous after passing

Develop new situations gradually with calm support and useful reflection.

Urban learner

Limited road variety

Extend your experience into rural roads, darkness and difficult conditions.

The official syllabus

The six Pass Plus training modules

Pass Plus training takes at least six hours and covers six areas. Sessions should be practical, although local conditions can mean part of a module is discussed rather than driven.

Driving in town

Observation, vulnerable road users, complex junctions, busy traffic and creating safe space.

All-weather driving

Grip, visibility, stopping distance and safer decisions in rain, glare and poor conditions.

Rural roads

Limit points, bends, narrow roads, hidden hazards, safe speed and overtaking judgement.

Driving at night

Headlights, reduced visibility, reflections, fatigue awareness and adapting your speed.

Dual carriageways

Joining, lane choice, safe gaps, overtaking, slip roads and planning at higher speed.

Motorways

Smart-motorway awareness, signs, lanes, junctions, breakdown planning and safe progress.

Assessment throughout

How Pass Plus training works

You are assessed as the course develops. Completion means reaching the required standard in all six modules, not simply attending for six hours.

01

Starting conversation

Discuss your experience, confidence, usual journeys and the roads you want to master.

02

Practical training

Work through the six modules with coaching adapted to the conditions and your ability.

03

Standard reached

Demonstrate sound observation, judgement and control across each part of the syllabus.

04

Certificate application

Use the signed training report to apply to DVSA for your official Pass Plus certificate.

Useful protection against overpromising

Pass Plus and car insurance discounts

Some insurers may offer a discount after you complete Pass Plus, but not every insurer participates and the saving varies. Check directly with insurers before booking if a discount is your main reason for taking the course.

  • You need the official Pass Plus certificate to claim a participating insurer’s discount
  • Not all insurance companies offer a reduction
  • The saving depends on the insurer and your individual quotation
  • Drivers who passed over a year ago should check eligibility with the insurer
  • The strongest benefit is broader experience and safer independent driving

Check the official GOV.UK Pass Plus guidance, The Highway Code and official motorway guidance. Insurance discounts are never guaranteed.

Local advanced training

Pass Plus training across Nottingham

NGPass Driving Academy combines local urban experience with suitable rural, dual-carriageway and motorway training routes, selected for the module and current conditions.

A Pass Plus course in Nottingham should expose you to more than the roads used before your test. Urban sessions can develop judgement around tram-side roads, bus lanes, multi-lane approaches and vulnerable road users. Training then extends into faster dual carriageways, rural roads and motorway journeys where planning must reach further ahead.

Teaching since 2010, NGPass Driving Academy provides calm, one-to-one Pass Plus driving lessons in Nottingham in an automatic car. The focus is not on collecting a certificate as quickly as possible. It is on giving a newly qualified driver the judgement, motorway confidence and adaptable habits needed for safer journeys after the course.
