Is Pass Plus worth it? It can be a useful investment if you want supported experience across unfamiliar roads and conditions after passing. Judge it by the driving skills you need to develop. An insurance discount is possible, but should not be assumed.
Passing your test opens up journeys that may still feel unfamiliar: a motorway trip, an evening drive outside Nottingham or a commute through busy junctions. You do not have to feel equally confident in every situation immediately.
This guide explains the course, how to budget and when a more focused lesson may be a better fit. For availability and the training offered by NGPass Driving Academy, see our Pass Plus training in Nottingham.
What is Pass Plus?
GOV.UK describes Pass Plus as post-test practical training lasting at least six hours. It can be taken at any time, although it is expected to be most useful during the first year after passing. You need an approved driving instructor who is specifically registered with Pass Plus.
Think of it as an opportunity to broaden your experience with feedback. It is not a replacement driving test or a promise that you will never make a mistake.
What does the course cover?
The six modules cover town driving, weather, rural roads, darkness, dual carriageways and motorways. The following are useful learning goals to discuss when planning your sessions.
Identify situations that still divide your attention, such as unfamiliar junctions, changing lanes or planning around pedestrians and cyclists.
Discuss how your journey planning changes with conditions, including when postponing a journey would be sensible.
Build experience reading an unfamiliar road rather than depending on remembered bends and junctions.
Explore what feels different after dark and which parts of your usual observation routine need more attention.
Work on the decisions that make faster-road journeys feel demanding, with time to review them afterwards.
Discuss a realistic journey goal and the joining, lane-planning and exit decisions you want to practise with support.
Training should be practical, but local conditions can require some theory-based coverage. GOV.UK says you will normally spend at least 5.5 hours driving. You should not expect a course booking to guarantee experience in every type of weather.
Is there a test or an automatic certificate?
There is no separate final test. However, your instructor assesses you throughout and you must reach the required standard in every module. Six hours is the minimum course length, not guaranteed completion.
Once the standard is reached, you and your instructor sign the training report. You apply to DVSA for your certificate using that report. See the official training and certificate guidance for the current process.
Before paying, ask how progress will be reviewed and what happens if you need additional time. A clear explanation at the start makes it easier to budget without feeling pressure to finish to an arbitrary deadline.
How much does Pass Plus cost in Nottingham?
NGPass Driving Academy’s published training rate is £42.50 per hour. At that rate, six hours comes to £255. This is the cost of six hours, not a guarantee that every driver will complete the course within that time.
The rate was checked against our Pass Plus service page on 13 September 2026. Check current prices and confirm your total and schedule before booking.
When comparing providers, ask:
- Is the instructor registered to deliver Pass Plus?
- How are the six modules scheduled?
- How much practical driving is included?
- What is the charge for additional training?
- What are the payment and cancellation terms?
Compare what you will learn and how the sessions fit your needs, as well as the headline price. A package that is awkward to attend or poorly matched to your experience may offer less value than it first appears.
Will Pass Plus reduce your insurance?
Possibly, but not every insurer offers a discount. GOV.UK’s insurance guidance confirms that the amount depends on the insurer and that you need your certificate.
Ask for the actual effect on your quote before treating a potential saving as part of your budget. Compare equivalent cover, excesses and terms, rather than looking at a discount percentage in isolation.
If a confirmed saving is smaller than the course fee, the remaining question is whether the training itself is worth the difference to you. Do not book on the assumption that Pass Plus will pay for itself.
Who is likely to find it useful?
Start with the journeys you want to make. You might be comfortable around your neighbourhood but unsure about travelling further for work. You might avoid evening journeys or rely on someone else to drive whenever a motorway is involved.
Write down two or three concrete goals before speaking to an instructor. “I want to drive to visit family independently” gives a more useful starting point than “I want to be confident everywhere”.
For Nottingham drivers, the training plan can build outwards from familiar local driving into a broader range of journeys. The value comes from learning how to adapt, not collecting a list of roads you have visited.
Pass Plus or a focused driving lesson?
Pass Plus makes sense when you want the breadth of the six-module course. If one particular skill is holding you back, a targeted session may be more appropriate.
- Motorway lessons can focus on faster-road confidence.
- Night driving lessons can address journeys after dark.
- Refresher training can help you discuss returning after a break.
Ask which option best matches your goals. You do not need to commit to the broadest course simply because it has a recognised name.
Frequently asked questions
Is Pass Plus compulsory after passing?
No. It is optional development training. Choose it because the course fits your learning goals, rather than assuming every new driver must complete it.
Can I take it more than a year after passing?
Yes. The scheme is not restricted to your first year. Tell the instructor about your recent driving experience so you can discuss whether this course or targeted tuition is more appropriate.
Will I finish in exactly six hours?
Not necessarily. You need to meet the standard across all modules. Ask about progress reviews and additional-hour charges before starting.
Does every insurer recognise Pass Plus?
No. Check with the insurer before booking if a discount is important to your decision. There is no universal percentage saving.
Does NGPass Driving Academy offer automatic training?
Yes. Discuss automatic Pass Plus availability with NGPass Driving Academy, including your postcode, driving experience and the journeys you want to feel better prepared for.
Feel better prepared for your next journey
Tell NGPass Driving Academy your postcode, when you passed and which journeys you want help with. We can discuss whether Pass Plus or focused post-test lessons would suit you.
