01

Start with the essentials.

Get the paperwork in place and choose tuition that suits the way you learn.

Your provisional licence is the starting point. Apply through DVLA, check the eligibility and eyesight requirements, and wait until you are legally entitled to start driving. Most people begin car lessons at 17; applying for a licence does not mean you can immediately drive a car.

  1. Use the official application service and check its current requirements and fee.
  2. Have your identity and address information ready.
  3. Check the details on your licence when it arrives and bring it to your first lesson.

Apply for your provisional licence on GOV.UK →

A check code lets you share your driving record with your instructor without sharing your account password. You need your driving licence number, National Insurance number and the postcode on your licence to use the official service.

  1. Open the DVLA viewing and sharing service.
  2. Check your record and choose to generate a check code.
  3. Give the code and the last eight characters of your licence number to your instructor through an agreed channel.

The code is valid for 21 days and can be used once. Generate another if it expires or has already been used. The service is free; only share the details with someone you trust.

Choose someone who helps you understand your decisions, makes safety clear and gives honest feedback. Ask how lessons are planned, how progress is recorded and how support changes as you become more independent.

  • Check that the instructor is legally authorised to give paid tuition.
  • Confirm automatic or manual tuition, pickup area and availability.
  • Ask about lesson length, payment, cancellation and test-day vehicle arrangements.
  • Explain any nerves, previous experience or support needs before booking.

At NGPass Driving Academy, Abdul provides calm, one-to-one automatic driving lessons in Nottingham, with teaching experience since 2010.

Understand it. Then apply it.

Use these guides between lessons. Bring questions back to the car and connect them with real driving decisions.

Book directly with the official service using your provisional licence details. Check the test centre, date, accessibility arrangements and current fee before paying. Keep your confirmation and follow its instructions about identification.

Tell DVSA about any reading, hearing or other support needs through the booking process. Arrange revision before choosing a date so the booking gives you a workable preparation period.

Build understanding alongside your practical lessons. Use The Highway Code, Know Your Traffic Signs and Driving – the Essential Skills, together with suitable official practice material.

  • Use short, regular revision sessions and revisit topics you get wrong.
  • Explain why an answer is safe instead of memorising its wording.
  • Practise recognising developing hazards, not simply visible objects.
  • Bring questions into your lessons and connect them to real road situations.

Mock scores help you identify gaps, but they do not replace understanding. Revise both parts of the test.

Learn the shape, colour and meaning together, then think about the decision each sign requires. A sign is useful only when you notice it early enough to act safely.

  • Study signs giving orders, warnings, directions and information.
  • Read supplementary plates: restrictions may depend on time or vehicle type.
  • Connect signs with road markings, lane choice and speed planning.
  • Review unfamiliar signs after a lesson rather than guessing their meaning.

In Nottingham, pay particular attention to bus-lane restrictions, tram-related signs, pedestrian crossings and changing speed limits.

The examiner asks one “tell me” question before driving and one “show me” question while you drive. Learn the checks in the actual car you will use, because controls and opening mechanisms differ.

  • Practise explaining essential safety checks in your own words.
  • Locate the lights, washers, demisters and other relevant controls.
  • Rehearse practical demonstrations with your instructor.
  • Keep observation, steering and safe control your priority when demonstrating on the move.

Use the official question list for revision. Ask for clarification during training when you do not understand a check.

Prepare from evidence.

Make your next move from a clear picture of your driving, your booking and the work still to do.

Discuss readiness and your instructor’s availability before booking. Passing theory is normally required before you can book the practical test. Use your own details and book through GOV.UK.

Current car-test booking rules: learners must book and manage their own test. The booking can be changed up to twice, and moves between centres are restricted to permitted nearby centres. Check the current official rules before making a decision.

Choose a centre you can realistically prepare for. Booking a distant appointment does not guarantee that you can transfer it to Nottingham. Confirm test-day car use separately with your instructor.

Book your practical test · Read the current booking rules

Use the official service yourself and check the deadline shown in your booking. For a car practical test, you normally need at least 10 full working days’ notice to change or cancel without losing the fee. Monday to Saturday count; Sundays and public holidays do not.

The theory-test notice period is different: at least three full working days. Do not confuse these deadlines with your instructor’s lesson cancellation policy.

Before changing a practical test, check your remaining changes, permitted centres and instructor availability. Tell your instructor as soon as your booking changes.

Readiness means safe, consistent driving with little or no help. Work with your instructor to identify evidence of progress across varied roads, rather than relying on a fixed lesson count or memorised route.

  • Practise independent decisions, observations, speed and positioning.
  • Use realistic mock tests to identify patterns needing more work.
  • Review manoeuvres, safety questions and unfamiliar situations.
  • Check the booking instructions, required documents and vehicle arrangements.

For Nottingham learners, preparation may include Colwick or Chilwell and surrounding roads. The aim is adaptable driving wherever the examiner takes you.

Tell your instructor which situations worry you: being assessed, unfamiliar roads, manoeuvres or fear of making mistakes. A specific concern is easier to work on than a general aim to “be confident”.

  • Build up challenging situations gradually during lessons.
  • Practise with realistic mock-test conditions.
  • Plan your journey, documents and routine before test day.
  • Focus on the next safe decision instead of trying to judge your score.

Confidence grows from preparation and repeatable skills. A small mistake does not tell you the overall result; keep driving safely and follow the examiner’s directions.
