Your learning journey

A clear route from first licence to full independence

The stages overlap, but each has a purpose. Build knowledge alongside practical skill and make decisions from evidence rather than pressure to reach the test quickly.

Get your provisional

Check eligibility, eyesight and identity requirements.

Begin lessons

Develop safe routines with structured one-to-one tuition.

Study theory

Connect rules and hazard awareness to real driving.

Track 27 skills

Build from introduction to independent reflection.

Use mock tests

Measure performance under realistic conditions.

Take the test

Attend when safe performance is consistent.

Keep developing

Build experience with motorway or Pass Plus training.

Make practice count

Turn information into safe driving decisions

Reading is useful when it changes what you notice, predict and do. Bring questions into lessons and connect every rule to a real situation on the road.

During lessons

Use an active learning cycle

Agree the goal, practise with the right support, then reflect on the evidence. The important question is not only whether the task was completed, but whether the decision was safe and repeatable.

  • Identify what you need to notice earlier
  • Choose a safe speed before the hazard
  • Consider every road user affected
  • Repeat the skill on unfamiliar roads
Between lessons

Keep your knowledge connected

Short, regular revision is more useful than last-minute cramming. If you use private practice, it must be legal, insured and properly supervised, with goals agreed with your instructor.

  • Review The Highway Code and traffic signs
  • Practise hazard perception regularly
  • Record questions for your next lesson
  • Focus on consistency, not route memory

Visual revision

Learn what traffic signs require you to do

Recognising a sign is only the first step. A safe driver understands its meaning early enough to check mirrors, plan, communicate and adjust speed or position smoothly.

Signs giving orders

Use the shape, colour and symbol together, then connect the sign to the action the driver must take.

Ready to pass

Use evidence, not a test date

Knowing the local area can help you feel settled, but there are no routes to memorise. Test readiness means combining control, observation, judgement and responsibility without unnecessary prompting.

✓Independent decisions on familiar and unfamiliar roads
✓No serious or dangerous mistakes
✓Successful realistic mock tests
✓Show Me, Tell Me knowledge practised in the car
✓A plan for managing nerves and pressure
Common questions

Learner driver information explained

Where should I book my theory and practical driving tests?+

Use the official GOV.UK services linked on this page. Unofficial websites may charge extra and cannot offer special access to DVSA appointments.

Can my driving instructor book my practical test for me?+

No. Current GOV.UK guidance says a car driving test must be booked and managed by the learner. You can add your instructor’s reference number when booking to help check availability.

Must I pass the theory test before booking a practical test?+

Usually, yes. The official booking service will check your eligibility. Prepare properly rather than treating the theory test as a hurdle to rush through.

When should I book my driving test?+

Book around reliable evidence of readiness, not pressure from a date. You should be driving independently across varied roads, avoiding serious or dangerous faults and completing realistic mock tests successfully.

What happens in the Show Me, Tell Me part of the test?+

You will be asked vehicle-safety questions. One is answered before driving and another while driving. Your lessons should include safe, practical rehearsal in the car you will use.

Can private practice help between lessons?+

Yes, when the driver, supervisor, vehicle and insurance meet the legal requirements. Agree useful practice goals with your instructor so private practice reinforces safe routines.

Are there official driving test routes to memorise?+

DVSA does not provide a fixed route for learners to memorise. Preparation should develop transferable observation, planning, speed and judgement for any suitable road the examiner selects.

What licence will I receive after passing in an automatic car?+

A test passed in an automatic car gives entitlement to drive automatic vehicles. A separate manual practical test is needed before driving manual cars without supervision.
