You now book and manage your own car driving test. The 2026 DVSA changes also limit appointment changes and where you can move your booking. Speak to your instructor about preparation and availability before choosing a date.

If you are planning a test at Colwick or Chilwell, these rules affect how you book, look for an earlier appointment and change your plans. This guide explains the practical decisions for Nottingham learners, with links to the official services.

Checked against GOV.UK on 13 September 2026. These reforms concern car driving tests in England, Scotland and Wales.

What changed, and when?

31 March 2026

The allowance fell from six appointment changes to two.

12 May 2026

Learners took responsibility for their own bookings and changes. Unofficial services that scan for appointments are not allowed.

9 June 2026

Moving a booking became restricted to nearby centres, rather than any centre nationwide.

What to do now

Agree a realistic plan before committing your money, lesson schedule and available time.

See DVSA’s full explanation of the 2026 reforms. They arrived in stages, rather than all starting in June.

Can your instructor still book your test?

No. The official booking guidance says you must book, change, swap or cancel your car test yourself. Booking for someone else is against the law.

Your instructor still has an important role: assessing your driving, discussing the preparation you need and checking whether the proposed appointment fits their diary. That conversation should happen before you make a commitment.

At NGPass Driving Academy, arranging lessons and arranging your DVSA appointment are separate steps. A lesson booking does not reserve a practical test or automatically confirm use of the car. Read our guide to using an instructor’s car for your test.

What do the two permitted changes mean?

You can amend a car appointment twice. Changing the date and centre together counts as one amendment. After using the allowance, you must cancel and rebook if another change is needed. Check the official appointment-change service before acting.

Before accepting a replacement appointment, pause long enough to check the whole arrangement:

  • Can you realistically be ready by that date?
  • Can you attend without a work, college or family conflict?
  • Has your instructor agreed availability and vehicle use?
  • Can you travel to the centre and allow adequate preparation time?

An earlier slot is useful only if the rest of the plan works. Avoid repeatedly moving a booking simply because a slightly earlier appointment appears.

Can you move a test to Colwick or Chilwell?

For a new booking, permitted moves are to the three centres nearest your currently booked centre, or back to the original centre on that booking. For bookings predating 9 June, transitional rules use the centre held on that date. Check DVSA’s linked centre checker before assuming a move is possible.

This makes a distant placeholder appointment a poor basis for a Nottingham learning plan. Choose a centre you genuinely intend to use. Our Nottingham test-centre guide can help you think through the location, but the official service determines your permitted moves.

Do not rely on a map, a friend’s old booking experience or the assumption that two centres in the same region must be interchangeable.

Can you still find cancellations?

Yes. GOV.UK says new appointments are released at 6am on Mondays, 24 weeks ahead. Earlier appointments can appear throughout the week when other learners cancel or change. There is no official waiting list or cancellation list.

Use GOV.UK directly. The rules prohibit unofficial cancellation-finder websites or apps that scan the booking service. A service being available online does not mean it is permitted.

Our guide to finding an earlier Nottingham driving test explains how to approach the search without letting the calendar dictate your readiness.

How much notice do you need?

Normally, give at least 10 full working days to change or cancel a car test without paying again. Monday to Saturday count; Sundays and public holidays do not. GOV.UK lists limited unavoidable circumstances where a short-notice refund may be available with evidence.

Put a review reminder in your diary before the deadline. Use that review to discuss progress, rather than waiting until the final few days to decide whether the appointment is realistic.

Keep test and lesson cancellation terms separate. DVSA’s notice requirement concerns your practical test fee. Your instructor’s lesson and vehicle-use arrangements have their own terms, which you should check independently.

Will the reforms reduce Nottingham waiting times?

The booking rules do not guarantee an earlier appointment at either local centre. A change to how bookings are managed is not evidence of a particular wait for your preferred date.

Check live availability and use our Nottingham waiting-times guide to understand the difference between published statistics and what you can actually book.

If your test is some way off, agree a sustainable lesson schedule. If an earlier date appears, discuss whether your skills are ready for the shorter timetable. Neither a long wait nor a convenient cancellation is a reliable measure of driving ability.

A practical booking plan

  1. Review your progress. Identify the skills you still need to perform without help.
  2. Discuss availability. Check the instructor’s diary and ask for their reference number.
  3. Prepare your details. For a standard learner car test, pass your theory first and have your licence number and payment card ready.
  4. Book through GOV.UK. Choose your intended centre and a realistic date.
  5. Keep the confirmation. Record the appointment and a preparation-review date in your diary.

A mock driving test can give that review a clear focus. Ask which decisions remain inconsistent and what practice would address them. Our guide to common driving test faults offers useful discussion points.

Frequently asked questions

Can someone help me use the booking website?

Yes. DVSA allows support while you are present, with you completing as many steps as possible. This is different from handing over the booking for someone to manage independently.

Does changing my contact information use an amendment?

No. Updating contact details or the instructor reference does not use the allowance. DVSA-initiated changes also do not count and reset the allowance to two.

Are older instructor-booked tests still valid?

Yes. Previously arranged tests remain valid. Get the reference from your instructor so you can manage your own appointment.

Do these reforms cover theory tests?

No. This article concerns the 2026 car practical booking reforms. Check the separate official instructions for theory and other test types.

Should I take an earlier test if I still need prompts?

Discuss the specific prompts with your instructor first. An appointment becoming available does not resolve the skills behind them. Agree what needs to improve and whether the preparation time is realistic.
