How long is the wait for a driving test in Nottingham? Check available appointments through GOV.UK for the centre you intend to use. Published waiting-time statistics describe past experience or a dated availability measure. They cannot promise the date you will be offered today.

Driving test waiting times in Nottingham can affect how you plan lessons, work and family commitments. But an advertised “average wait” is only useful when you know what it measures and which month and centre it describes.

This guide explains the figures, how to check Colwick or Chilwell and how to keep your preparation moving while you wait. It complements our guide to finding earlier test appointments, which covers changing an existing booking in more detail.

What Is the Latest Official Information?

As checked on 12 September 2026, the DVSA car-test data page lists waiting-time tables updated on 9 September with data through August 2026. Table DRT122F provides the driving-test-centre breakdown; DRT121G covers countries and regions.

Use DRT122F to look up Nottingham (Colwick) or Nottingham (Chilwell), and read the column heading and reporting month alongside the value. This guide does not quote an unverified August figure for either centre. For an appointment you can actually book, use the live service.

That distinction matters when comparing websites. A regional figure, a centre’s historical median and a screenshot of a booking search can all show different numbers without describing the same thing.

Three Different Meanings of “Waiting Time”

Median booking-to-test wait

A historical measure of how long people who completed tests waited between booking and taking them.

10% availability measure

How many weeks ahead at least 10% of a centre’s weekly appointments remain available at the measurement point.

Live appointment availability

The dates offered by the booking service when you search. These can change.

Your practical timeline

The appointment that also fits your readiness, instructor, car and personal commitments.

DVSA’s explanation of its additional waiting-time data confirms that the median includes completed tests, not only passes. It also confirms that centre-level data is published alongside regional and national figures.

The median is the middle of the ordered waits. As an illustrative example, waits of 4, 6, 8, 12 and 20 weeks have a median of 8 weeks. That calculation does not mean a new applicant will receive an appointment eight weeks away.

The two published measures answer different questions. A lower historical median does not prove that current availability has improved. Compare like-for-like measures across reporting periods before drawing that conclusion.

How to Check Colwick and Chilwell Availability

  1. Choose a realistic centre. Discuss where you can prepare and whether your instructor can support a test there.
  2. Use the official service. Start with GOV.UK’s driving-test booking page, or the change service if you already have an appointment.
  3. Read the full appointment. Check the centre, date and time together.
  4. Confirm practical arrangements. Allow for travel, preparation before the test and the return journey.
  5. Retain the confirmation. Plan around the booking you have completed rather than a date you briefly saw.

Do not choose a distant centre simply because its published wait looks shorter. Current GOV.UK guidance says to book where you intend to take the test, with subsequent centre changes restricted to nearby options.

Our Nottingham test-centre guide can help with local planning. Location familiarity is useful, but it does not replace the ability to make safe decisions on unfamiliar roads.

When Are New Tests Released?

The DVSA appointment-release guide distinguishes new appointments released at 6am on Mondays, 24 weeks ahead, from earlier appointments. Earlier dates can appear throughout the week when bookings change or extra examiner availability is added.

There is no best time to find an earlier appointment. DVSA advises against repeated searches over a short period or using several devices at once. The online service normally operates from 6am to 11:40pm.

A manageable checking routine is more useful than letting the search interrupt your entire day. Decide beforehand which dates would work so an opening does not force a rushed decision about lessons, transport or time off.

Why Can the Date I See Be Later Than the Median?

The median looks backwards at completed tests. Your search looks at what remains available now. People included in the historical figure may have moved their appointments earlier or later, while current demand and available appointments may differ.

For your own planning, separate what you know from what you hope will happen. You may know your booked date and lesson availability, while hoping for an earlier opening. Build a workable plan around the confirmed date and agree how you would respond if a suitable alternative appears.

A booking window also sets how far ahead appointments are released. “Nothing suitable appeared in my search” does not establish an exact wait beyond that window.

Keep Your Driving Progressing While You Wait

A long gap can make learners feel they must either keep taking the same lesson every week or stop completely. Discuss a schedule based on your current ability, budget and how well you retain skills between sessions.

If you are still developing core skills

Use lessons to resolve the situations where you still need help. Be specific: late lane selection, difficulty judging approaching traffic or inconsistent observations need different practice. Our roundabouts guide and parallel-parking guide can support the discussion.

If you are close to test standard

Ask your instructor how to maintain consistency without repeating familiar routes mechanically. Vary the demands, include independent decisions and review any weaknesses through a mock driving test in Nottingham.

If the uncertainty is increasing your nerves

Agree the next review point rather than judging readiness every time you search for a date. A clear lesson goal gives you something useful to work on while availability remains outside your control. Support for nervous drivers can be discussed where anxiety is affecting your driving.

Before Accepting an Earlier Appointment

Confirm the instructor and car are available, and that your remaining preparation fits the time. Read our guide to using an instructor’s car for the test before assuming that a newly booked appointment guarantees vehicle access.

You must manage your own car-test booking. NGPass Driving Academy can discuss training and availability but cannot book or change it for you. Check the current rules before committing, including change limits and any fee implications.

A shorter wait is only helpful when the date is usable. If important skills still need instructor intervention, bringing the appointment forward may reduce the preparation time you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the exact current wait at Colwick or Chilwell?

Use GOV.UK to see bookable dates. Historical centre statistics are available in DVSA table DRT122F, but they are not a live appointment forecast.

Does DVSA publish median waits for individual centres?

Yes. Its published waiting-time data includes driving-test-centre breakdowns as well as regional and national information.

Does the median include only people who passed?

No. DVSA describes the measure as covering completed tests, including appointments moved earlier or later.

Does a lower median prove the backlog has reduced?

Not by itself. Check the reporting month, comparable earlier figures and availability measures. A historical median and a live booking search answer different questions.

Should I stop lessons until my test is closer?

Discuss this with your instructor. The right schedule depends on your progress, skill retention, budget and remaining preparation needs.
